Nobody waits ten years between albums. Not on purpose. But New Orleans songwriter Kristin Diable didn’t have a choice — and that is exactly what makes Impossible Things one of the most honest records you’ll hear this year.
When her last album, Create Your Own Mythology — produced by Grammy-winner Dave Cobb and premiered by NPR — earned her national acclaim, performances at Austin City Limits and Jazz Fest, and placements on CBS, Netflix, and Amazon, it looked like everything was aligning. What followed were years most people keep private: a global pandemic that shuttered the music industry, an abusive marriage, the death of her brother to the opioid epidemic, and the arrival of a daughter, Lucinda, who became both her greatest joy and catalyst toward 'Impossible Things.'
Making another album didn’t just feel hard. For a while, it felt impossible.
Impossible Things is what happened when she chose to believe otherwise. Recorded at Dockside Studios in the swamps of south Louisiana with producer Ben Alleman (Dr. John, Ryan Adams, Jenny Lewis, Madi Diaz), it is the fullest expression yet of the sound Diable has always been building toward: dream-pop Americana rooted in Southern soil and reaching toward the cinematic. Unhurried. Unflinching. Deeply, stubbornly alive.
The album doesn’t dramatize her hardships so much as alchemize them. “Shame Say” confronts her abuser with compassion rather than fury. “Bidding” is the anthem of anyone who has finally, quietly decided they deserve better. “Ever Softly You Go” is a lullaby for two children at once — the daughter sleeping in her arms and the girl she once was. “Impossible Things” itself reads like a spell, a set of beliefs to say out loud before the day begins.
“Impossible Things” is a transcendent, haunting joy ride rooted in Diable’s mystical southern americana foundation, while projecting into new unchartered psychedelic, cinematic, electronic pop leaning sonic landscapes. This is Dream Pop Americana.
Some records want to impress you. Impossible Things wants to companion you. It believes you can do hard miracles before breakfast. It believes your art is your life and your life is your art. It whispers that transcendences is not on the other side of any challenges, but right here in the present, if we can quiet the noise just long enough to hear it.
